How to upscale video on iPhone — without uploading it to the cloud

Most "video enhancer" tools work the same way: you upload your footage to someone's server, wait in a queue, and download the result. That is a problem if the clip is personal, unreleased, or client work. This guide shows the other way — upscaling video entirely on the iPhone itself, so the file never leaves your hand.

What you need

• An iPhone or iPad on a recent iOS version. Newer chips (A15 and later) process noticeably faster.

Step by step

1. Open the app and select a video

   Tap Select Video. You can pull a clip from the Photos library, import from the Files app (including iCloud Drive), or record something new with the camera.

2. Choose the output quality

   Pick a preset: SD, HD, 4K, 8K, or 16K. For old phone footage and social clips, HD or 4K is usually the sweet spot — it quadruples pixel density without producing enormous files.

3. Pick an AI model

   Apple SuperRes and MetalFX are free, fast, and run on Apple's own graphics stack. BSRGAN and Real-ESRGAN (PRO) reconstruct the most detail — best for badly compressed or very soft footage.

4. Optionally trim, crop, or filter

   Tap the video to open the editor if you want to cut a section, fix orientation, adjust speed, or apply color before upscaling.

5. Convert — on the device

   Tap Convert and watch the progress bar. Every frame is processed locally by the iPhone's GPU and Neural Engine. Nothing is uploaded; you can even switch on Airplane Mode first to verify.

6. Compare and export

Honest expectations: what AI upscaling can and can't do

Upscaling reconstructs plausible detail — it does not recover information that was never recorded. You will get the best results on footage that is soft, compressed, or downscaled: old phone videos, WhatsApp/Telegram-compressed clips, DVD-era footage, screen recordings. Heavy motion blur, severe low-light noise, or out-of-focus shots improve less, because the source detail simply is not there. A good rule: if you can squint and tell what should be sharp, AI can usually make it sharp.
